I've been seeing the trailer for weeks now and the movie has been out for some time. I wasn' expecting much from this movie, in fact, the hype surrounding it was a perfect reason for me not to watch it. Since most of the audience is made up of mindless teenagers with an irrational love for sparkling-gay vampires (see the gayest movie ever), i've learned not to trust the hype. But this movie was getting good reviews everywhere, even on rottentomatoes.com it was weird. So i just watched kick-ass, and i was skeptical at first, just expecting some mildly funny comedy at best.
But, hell, this was better than anything i was expecting ! Kick-ass isn't what you expect or could guess, it's far too insane for conventional wisdom. The premise of this movie is a frighteningly simple one: what if someone really tried to be a superhero ? What would the consequences be ? What would he do without superpowers and stuff ?
Well: the answer, you'll have to watch the movie to find that out !
Kick-Ass is told entirely from the perspective of the main character Dave Lizewski, played with disturbingly accomplished ease by teen heart-throb Aaron Johnson. He probably gets twice the screen time of any other character, both as himself and as his green suited alter-ego Kick-Ass. His character's inability to relate to girls of his age, the insular circles he moves in and the impact on him of becoming a superhero are all well observed.
But i'm not doing a full movie review here, as good as this movie is, it owes it to one character in particular: Hit-Girl, who is a an extremely badass purple-haired ninja. She rules because of her perfect dynamic of athletic poise, clinical lethality and the unbound cheerfulness with which she goes about her work.
I immediately fell in love with the 11-year old killing machine with the profanity skills of a dockland worker. She's just awesome ! That's the only word that can describe her. At one point, she went on to take out a hole building by herself, i couldn't help but notice the similarities between that scene and the scene in leone where Natalie Portman goes in a police station to take down the man who killed her family.
Left: If you haven't seen Léon (also called The Professional) yet, i suggest you do Right: Hit-girl
But the similarities end there, as hit-girl seems far more capable. The action scenes in the movie are both brutal and spectacular, and Hit-Girl has got moves that can make John Woo himself jealous. In short, she kicks more ass than kick-ass himslef and she's the most awesome female character i've ever seen !
I've decided not to give away what happens in Kick-Ass, as it's far too enjoyable to spoil here. What I can say is that, in structural terms, the narrative has a beginning, middle and end, with the story ramping through the centre to a suitably dramatic conclusion.
If i had to rate the movie, i'd say 8.5/10, really entertaining !

"I double dare you motherfucker" Probably everyone's favourite scene
